Tips for thrifty travellers

GENERAL Manager Wotif Brands, Megan Magill, dishes up her top tips for frugal travellers looking to save money while on holidays.

1. Go against the grain
Avoid popular tourist areas during peak season. For example beach accommodation is at a premium during the Christmas and New Year period.

Over the same period great rates are available in CBD and city hotels where travellers can take advantage of swimming pools, gyms and spas, without the queues.

2. Be your own travel agent
Get online and research. Everything that you need to make an informed decision can be found online. Wotif.com allows customers to compare different deals for accommodation in one window, giving you a great tool to save the most money.

3. Be adventurous
If you are flexible on the destination, go where the deals take you. Rather than only looking in the most popular beach spots, browse a variety of beach destinations and then let the discounts make the decision for you.

4. Look for value-added inclusions
Many hotels and resorts add inclusions to their deals. Complimentary breakfasts and free parking can be worth their weight in gold and keep additional holiday costs to a minimum.

5. How to get a better deal on an already great deal
There are a few of easy ways to spot a great deal on Wotif.com. Our Flaming deals promise either a great discounted rate or added inclusions, or both!

Look out for our Wot Deals. These come along a few times a week and are exclusive to Wotif.com and are usually so good the whole office want to book them.

It's also worth taking a punt on our mystery Wot Hotel? deals. These are our regular hotels and apartments that have dropped their prices so low that they have to hide their name.

And finally keep an eye out for the deals with a little blue stripe and scissors to get an added bonus. Our Wot bonus? deals have a cashback component where you get a bonus for each night you book.

6. Choose the best accommodation for your needs
Weigh up the benefits of serviced apartments compared to standard hotel rooms and choose what suits your needs better. Serviced apartments are often good for families as they can offer more space, the option to eat in and are often cheaper. However, if you prefer your breakfast served to you in bed then maybe a hotel room is more what you are after.

7. Look for facilities
Check out the complimentary facilities available at your chosen property. Complimentary use of tennis courts, swimming pools and playgrounds will keep everyone amused and entertainment costs to a minimum.

8. Act quickly
If you see a bargain - snap it up!

9. Choose wisely
Be sure to choose your travel website carefully! It needs to be easy to use, and can compare many different options in one window. Ensure there is a customer service line you can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In cases of emergencies and changes to schedules a customer service representative could assist in a difficult situation. Also choose a site that allows telephone bookings to be made without an additional fee being charged.

10. Get on the database
Subscribe to the Wotif.com newsletter Wotmail so you're the first to know about our latest exclusive deals via email. You'll get the very best in accommodation and flight specials each week, direct to your inbox. You can also create a Wotmail profile so you get more of the deals you're looking for.
