Mini Moto Champs called off
CQ Mini Moto president Chris Jones was looking forward to this weekend's competition at the Gladstone Kart Track.
But the Australian Mini Moto Mini Motard Championships have been cancelled.
Only 17 riders signed up to compete across five classes. Nominations were extended, but there was still no interest.
The decision to call the championships off was made mid-last week.
Jones said it was tough, but necessary.
He said the championships were generally held in the southern states, where the sport was more popular.
"They're happy to race in their own backyard. Nobody was interested to travel," he said.
Jones believed steep accommodation rates were partly to blame.
"What was available was ridiculously priced," he said.
Jones, a keen rider, was disappointed with the southern neighbours.
"It's going to affect the sport as a whole," he said.
"It shows interest is dropping off, as well as the relationship between the states."
Jones said he travelled to compete in Victoria two years in a row. And the year before he made the trip to New South Wales.
He reckoned it was about time Central Queensland had a look-in.
The championships are off but local riders will still meet this weekend
