Tomboys needed in Men's Shed for women

WOMEN’S SHED: Alison Taber wants to hear from women interested in getting their hands dirty in a traditional man’s domain.

AFTER 20 years of working in call centres, admin and reception, Clarenza resident Alison Taber wants to look around and smell the sawdust.

Inspired by what she has heard about the Men's Shed, the self-confessed tomboy wants to find like-minded women keen to learn new skills and share experiences.

With this in mind she has set up a gmail account, tomboysshackgrafton@gmail.com as a starting point to setting up a group similar to the Men's Shed.

"It doesn't have to be for retirees, but there must be women out there who have skills or the desire to do things a bit more heavy duty than knitting," she said.

Ms Taber, who found herself single after a recent divorce, said she has always been more comfortable doing things normally thought of as male.

"Growing up in the Central Coast, our family was really involved in rugby league," she said.

"I was always knocking about managing junior teams, setting up fields and doing jobs around the ground."

Ms Taber said it would be good to find out how many women shared an interest in things like wood working, welding and similar fields.
