Torch relay double

FATHER and daughter Ray and Jessica Smith, of Grafton, are in line for a unique Olympic double, following Ray’s appointment this week to carry the Torch in the Paralympics Torch relay.

Jessica has already been selected to carry the Olympic torch when it passes through the Clarence Valley in the round-Australia relay before the Sydney Games.

A champion disabled swimmer, she is still working towards possible inclusion in the disabled swimming team for the Paralympics.

Mr Smith was one of more than 50 individuals nominated by their local councils to represent their communities in the Paralympics Torch Relay.

Mr Smith said he would carry the torch over a one kilometre leg at Charlestown, Newcastle, on October 15.

He expects to cover the distance in around five minutes.

Heavily involved in disabled sport through Jessica, Mr Smith said he was proud and delighted to be included in the Paralympics Torch Relay.
