Torpedos clean up in Sydney

IT was fun all round on February 12 when the Grafton Dragon Boat Club, including their juniors, the Torpedos, joined the celebrations for Chinese New Year at Darling Harbour.

The adult team started the competition day at 8.30am and took fifth place at the rear of the pack in the premier division.

The Torpedos were off to a flying start with a first place and a time of 1 min 9secs in their race.

Throughout the day the Torpedos won all of their heats with consistent times as well as providing entertainment for the other teams with their uniform propeller hats.

The adults’ second heat gave them a placing of fourth and guaranteed them a place in the premier regional final.

The Torpedos progressed into the junior final which was to be run shortly after the premier regional final.

The adults made their way to the start line for the regional final. The buzzer sounded and all the boats surged forward.

Throughout the race Camden Haven pulled ahead, creating a significant lead.

Within the last third of the race, Grafton dug deep and pulled Camden Haven back. The result was a photo finish, with Camden Haven taking the gold by a tiny margin. Grafton took home the silver.

With the conclusion of the adults’ race, several assisting juniors re-joined the Torpedos and readied themselves for the junior final.

The Torpedos had a strong start, pulling ahead of the other teams early in the race.

Throughout the race, some of the other teams started to pull back the leaders, but the Torpedos upped the ante and were able to finish in first place taking out the gold.

The celebrations continued into the night before the juniors were put to bed ready for the State training session the next morning.
