Towner in with chance in Big Wave

ANGOURIE’S Laurie Towner is a finalist in the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards.

A crazy collection of colossal waves and courageous riders, from the wilds of south-west Australia to the chilly nooks of New Zealand’s South Island faces the judges as the awards enter their final selection phase.

It is now down to six Biggest Wave nominees, four Biggest Paddle-In contenders, and six possible Biggest Slabs from the 50-plus entries registered with organisers over the past eight months.

Biggest Slab challengers include BWA perennial Alfy Cater, and several rides from the notorious Tasmanian spot, Shipstern Bluff, while Paddle-in contenders include two New Zealanders - one being two-time Paddle-in winner Doug Young.

And a local lad is in with a shot.
