Triumph and tragedy for former locals on The Voice

IT WAS a night of both heartache and triumph for former Maclean brother and sister Chris and Kim Sheehy when they appeared on Channel Nine's reality singing show, The Voice, last night.

The episode featured the crucial blind audition phase of the competition where the performers had to prove their vocal prowess to the four judges - Seal, Joel Madden, Delta Goodrem and Ricky Martin - who initially have their backs to the competitors.

If impressed, a judge turns their chair around to see the performer - the performer then either joins that judge's team or - if more than one judge turns their chair - has to choose which team to join.

Out of the 56 contestants, The Clarence Valley was represented by Chris and Kim - now based in Brisbane after growing up in Maclean - who gave it their all.

Chris's performance of One More Night by Maroon Five drew almost universal praise from the judges - all but Ricky Martin turned their chairs.

"You've got a lot of soul in your voice - I'm really quite surprised actually," Seal commented.

Madden - whose team Chris eventually chose to join - was also full of praise.

"You were doing things with your voice that were almost perfect - it was just special, man," Joel said.

Chris now goes through to the next round and will receive professional coaching from Joel.

Unfortunately Chris's older sister Kim fared less successfully with her performance of Love Song by Sara Barielles failing to move any of the judges.

The judges said they admired her performance and look but said the song just hadn't grabbed them.

"I really like your style, your voice - maybe you struggled with the song a bit but you have a great voice. Don't let this scare you away from continuing to follow your dream," Joel told her.

The Voice returns again on Sunday night on Channel Nine.
