Trolley collector hurt in alleged bashing

A SOUTH Grafton man has been charged with assault after a trolley collector was allegedly bashed at Grafton’s Aldi supermarket on Saturday night.

Police are also investigating the involvement of two other men in the alleged assault, which happened outside the supermarket on Prince Street at about 7.50pm.

The victim, who was understood to be in Grafton Base Hospital with cuts and bruises yesterday, was working as a trolley collector when the incident happened.

Police said a 20-year-old South Grafton man approached the victim on the footpath near the store and the pair began arguing.

The South Grafton man allegedly punching the worker while two other men allegedly joined in by knocking the man to the ground, where the trio allegedly continued to kick and punch him, police said.

Passers-by came to the Aldi worker’s aid and police were called.

“After investigation, the identity of the suspects was established and police later arrested a 20-year-old South Grafton man,” police said.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear in Grafton Local Court on January 18.

Police said charges relating to the other two men are pending, requiring further investigation.
