Truck fire brings Hwy to a crawl at Urunga

A DRIVER of a b-double ran from his cab as his rig burst into flames in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Shortly before 1am on the Pacific Hwy at Urunga the truck, carrying scrap metal, caught fire.

Emergency services, led by the Urunga Fire and Rescue crew, were quickly on the scene to extinguish the fire.

"The cabin was well alight and firefighters arrived shortly after and knocked down the flames very quickly," Fire and Rescue Duty Commander Inspector Tony Lenthall said.

"It is understood the fire may have been bearing-related, but the exact cause is still under investigation at this stage."

The incident caused extensive delays for heavy vehicles driving through Urunga.
