Tucabia hold on to win epic 2nd Grade decider

CRCA CRICKET: Minor premiers Tucabia Copmanhurst Phil Lloyd Earthmoving held on to win by 44 runs in the 2015/16 GDSC Second Grade Cricket grand final at McKittrick Park.

The match went deep into Sunday evening as Coutts Crossing unsuccessfully attempted to bridge a deficit for the second time in the match.

In a match where both sides struggled to get runs on the board the bowlers dominated to take 40 wickets across the two days.

Opener Derek Woods top scored with 28 as Tucabia made just 130 before being dismissed midway through day one on Saturday. However, by stumps Coutts were reeling at 9 for 65 in reply with veteran captain Greg Mears (5 for 34 off 14.3) and paceman Chris Bentley (4 for 25 off 9) wreaking havoc.

As the last two batsmen, Ethan Munro and Linden Harris dared to dream on Sunday morning, and propped the total to 102 before a run out found Coutts 28 runs short on the first innings.

Tucabia failed to put the game beyond doubt in its second innings and was dismissed for 138, setting Coutts a target of 167 runs for outright victory.

Again wickets fell at regular intervals and again it was left to Munro and Harris to stage a last wicket fightback. This time a Harris sky-ball was caught with the score on 122 to hand Tucabia the title by 44 runs.

Interestigly Mears and Bentley went wicketless in the final innings with Billy Blanch (3 for 30 off 5.5) and Kyle Hancock (5 for 32 off 7.3) taking over the wicket taking responsibilities.
