THE Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Centre wants to raise the roof of its historic building with a 12-hour music marathon next month.
It aims to raise $15,000 to fund repairs to their building in downtown Lismore.
The main fundraising event is a 12-hour Music Marathon, to be held on Saturday, March 23 from 9am until 9pm.
Students of the Conservatorium are collecting sponsors for each minute of music they will perform on the day.
A student playing a three-minute piece gathering $2 per minute from 10 different sponsors would raise $60.
Community music co-ordinator Zoë Abbott said the Music Marathon would be a great opportunity for every student of the conservatorium to perform on stage.
"Our end-of-term concerts are always very tightly scheduled, and we often have to hold sectional concerts over a few weeks just to fit everybody in," she said.
"The Music Marathon means that every student can perform in the same concert on the same day - we are very excited."
There is also a practice-a-thon running in the lead-up to the music marathon, where students keep a record of their practise sessions and collect sponsorship for each hour of practice.
Teachers at the Conservatorium are keen to see just how swiftly their students improve when they are motivated to practise more.
The Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Centre provides quality music education to all members of the community, from early childhood music right through to a diploma of music.
Music tuition, drama classes, and ensembles are held on-site six days a week; and music teachers from the conservatorium visit 13 schools across the region delivering instrument tuition and band programs during school hours through the Music in Schools program.
The building is the original Lismore High School, on the corner of Keen and Magellan Sts.
It has also been the Teachers' College and Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education.
Ms Abbott said that anyone who feels an affiliation with the building is welcome to support the music marathon as an audience member on the day, or by offering sponsorship.
