Two teens charged with plotting a terrorist act

TWO 19-year-olds will appear in a Sydney court today accused of plotting to carry out a terrorist act.

The man and woman have been in custody since last year when they were arrested as part of Operation Chillon.

The man was initially charged with three counts of collecting documents likely to facilitate terrorist acts, while the woman was charged with recklessly possessing and collecting items connected to a terrorist act.

Police allege the pair conspired "to do an act, or acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act or acts". They will face Central Local Court today.

The development followed extensive inquiries by officers from the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team and ongoing consultation with the Commonwealth Department of Public Prosecutions, police said.

The charges carry a penalty of life imprisonment.
