UK homes left without power for Christmas

HUNDREDS of thousands of Britons are grappling with a Christmas break without power after days of flooding rains and destructive winds lashed parts of Europe and killed at least six people.

One of those who died was a 46-year-old man who jumped into a river to rescue his dog.

The British Energy Network Association estimated 75,000 homes were without power, with many told not to expect electricity until the end of Boxing Day.

On Christmas morning, there were 126 flood warnings from Britain's Environment Agency, even as weather reports suggested the storms would begin to calm.

A return of widespread gales is expected for Britain on Friday.
