Unbeaten Chevalley punches Coutts to win under lights

NIGHT CRICKET: Coutts Crossing wicket keeper Lewis Chevalley closed out his second unbeaten innings of the week to complete a stunning seven-wicket victory under lights at McKittrick Park.

Chevalley took advantage of good batting conditions to finish on 63 not out as Coutts chased down GDSC Easts' total of 189 inside the 29th over in the ninth round of 2017/18 Cleavers Mechanical Night Cricket season.

Chevalley looked to up the ante alongside opener Tim Tilse (43) when he first strolled to the crease, before leading a consolidation with Ryan Cotten (26) and Nick Wood (20*).

"I think that is about 130-odd runs without losing his wicket in the last week for Lewy,” Tilse said. "He is just in some serious form with the bat.

"He is loving that number three position, I think he might have a bit of a mortgage on it.

"If he can keep getting runs there for the rest of the season it will keep us in good stead for the remainder of the summer.”

GDSC Easts opener Shannon Connor (47) led his side's assault in the early stages of their innings, and along with first drop Jimmy Watters (61), drove the ball to all parts of McKittrick Park.

But wickets at regular intervals - including a screamer outfield catch to Tilse - kept GDSC Easts from getting away from the Coutts attack.

"It just went in the air, and I looked back and no one else was really going for it, and I just thought well I better get on my bike,” Tilse said. "I just ran and as I got closer I thought, "I'm half a show here” so I just threw in the big dive and it hit perfect, face planted after it, but it was worth it.”

Coutts captain Bill North led the way for his side with the ball with his crafty off-spinners taking three wickets, including Connor's.

It was the first win of the night competition season for the defending premiers and helped them join the top four with their next fixture in January.
