THE GROUP 2 competition ladder has tightened as the result of upset victories to Macksville and Orara Valley.

Macksville shocked Grafton Ghosts with a 24 to 22 win at home, at one stage leading the defending premiers 14-nil.

Meanwhile after some competitive showings Orara Valley finally claimed their first major scalp by defeating Sawtell Panthers 36 to 32 at Coramba.

South Grafton Rebels were in danger of also losing to lower ranked opposition with scores locked at 16-all after Nambucca Heads fullback Jay Melrose scored twice against his former side. (live commentary on Twitter @bill_north #group2)

But a half-time spray of epic proportions from coach Dallas Waters ignited Rebels into action, who proved why they sit top of the ladder with a 42-point fiesta in the second half.

Halfback Ant Cowan linked brilliantly on the left fringes with centre Oral Monaghan, who scored a second half hattrick to do his selection claims no harm in his first game in the starting line up in place of suspended Hughie Stanley.

"It was pretty good to score a hattrick in my first game of first grade," the former Group 3 and North Coast representative player said.

"I've been training my a*** off and now I'm up here we'll see how it goes."

There were no doubts in the other Group 2 match played on the weekend as Coffs Harbour Comets ran riot to win 80 to 2 over Bellingen Dorrigo Magpies.

Ladder: 12 South Grafton, 10 Coffs Harbour, 8 Grafton, 6 Sawtell, 5 Macksville, 4 Orara Valley, 3 Nambucca Heads, 0 Bellingen.
