Australian uranium sales to India draw closer

A HIGH-level parliamentary committee has backed a deal to sell Australian uranium to India - if the sub-continent promises to create a national nuclear regulator.

The report from the Treaties Committee was released on Tuesday, recommending the uranium sales deal be completed.

Chairman and Sunshine Coast MP Wyatt Roy wrote that if the deal was sealed, it could double Australia's uranium sector, adding up to $1.75 billion to the economy.

But a final agreement would need to meet several conditions, including India creating an "independent nuclear regulatory authority under law", separating its civil and military nuclear facilities and drawing up a plan to decommission its nuclear facilities.

The government-dominated committee recommended the agreement be ratified, but uranium not be sold to India until the conditions were met.

Labor politicians Sue Lines and Melissa Parke urged the conditions must be met before ratification.

The pair wrote that the agreement reflected their "deep unease" at the "departure from the strong safeguards Australia has with many other countries".

Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson similarly wrote he was concerned the committee's report acknowledged "defects" in the deal, but did not require the defects to be addressed before a final deal.

He wrote the defects were underscored by evidence from "former top-ranking officials" warning against the deal.
