URB outfit too good for Opals

AS the only A grade game played due to a forfeit, this was going to be a tough gig for the Opals who began the game one player down.

Both teams started out strong, although it was apparent from the beginning that GHS held a commanding advantage in the game – but Tucabia were not about to give up without a fight.

By the end of the first quarter the score was 12-4 with a formidable GHS line-up against a fierce Tucabia side.

With a late replacement found in Krystal Stoker, the Opals worked hard to spark a comeback during the second quarter.

But in the end were challenged by the elevation and long grasp of GHS’s Tamara McSkimming and Kate Synott.

During the game both teams struggled with their shooting accuracy and had many attempts before the ball found the hoop to build their respective goal counts.

The URB’s defence in the goal area by Helen King and Sam Donavan was outstanding as they worked vigorously to ensure the GHS shots were kept to a minimum.

The score at halftime was 22-7 for the URB.

It was URB up 31-12 by the end of the third quarter and the game appeared to be in the bag but for the determination of the Opals.

The Opals’ two defences in the goal circle, Monica Hambly and Amy Colling, were persistent and persevered to prevent GHS shooters Stacey Roberts and Ash Durrington from scoring.

In the end, the massive lead attained by URB was too great for the Opals with a jubilant URB squad overwhelming a shattered Tucabia Opals team 36-17.
