Valley in top 10 percentile for domestic violence

CLARENCE Valley Mayor Richie Williamson has thrown his support behind an initiative to tackle domestic violence in the region head on.

The call is going out to sporting organisations across the Clarence Valley to blow the whistle on domestic violence and take part in the Domestic Violence Foul Play initiative.

Cr Williamson said it was unacceptable the valley rated in the State's top 10% for domestic assault offences and called on sports bodies to attend one of two information sessions later this month to learn how they could help.

"Domestic and family violence is everybody's business and is a national crisis," Cr Williamson said.

"This local initiative aims to bring sporting associations across the Clarence Valley together to make a stand against violence.

"It is an excellent opportunity for our sporting leaders to learn more about domestic and family violence and how they can work together at a local level to improve the safety of women and children in their clubs.

"They can learn how to access information and support services for people who need help and implement a code of conduct for all players, managers and executive club members."

Participating clubs will be invited to take part in a group photo that will be used as the campaign poster and be involved in ongoing initiatives, activities and media, including annual White Ribbon events.

Guest speakers will include representatives from police, the Clarence River Women's Refuge and Clarence Valley Council Ambassador, Brent Livermore.

There will be two information sessions; Grafton District Services Club, 6-9pm, Wednesday, February 17 Yamba Bowling Club, 6-9pm, Wednesday, February 24.

RSVP to Christine Bultitude on 6641 7211 to book a place as seats are limited.
