Valma swept off her feet
KEN and Valma Whelan met in a Masonic Hall in Melbourne.
It was Saturday night and the weekly dance was on.
Little did they know they'd still be by each other's side 60 years later.
The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
"I have really been blessed with this beautiful man," Mrs Whelan said.
"He's all a woman could ever want.
"When we got married, a friend of mine said, 'Val, you've got a man in a million here,' and she was right."
Mr Whelan said the key to a good marriage was simple.
"A long-lasting marriage is all about compatibility," he said.
"It's all give and take - and you must be able to forgive each other."
Mrs Whelan described Ken as her "rock".
"I've had a lot of ups and downs but Ken has always kept us stable," she said.
Mr and Mrs Whelan have one son, Michael, who now lives in Mackay.
They have two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
The couple now resides at the Solitary Islands Marine Park Resort in Wooli.
