Verity earns great opportunity

VERITY Simmons lives and breathes netball. And from next January Simmons will be living her dream of playing and training in the sport she loves – seven days a week.

The former Grafton netballer has been selected in the 2010 Australian Institute of Sport netball squad where she will train under the direction of legendary Australian wing defence player Simone McKinnis.

The AIS squad was selected by talent scouts who were impressed with Simmons’ efforts representing NSW at the National Championships this year.

The move to Canberra will give Simmons the opportunity and experience required to compete successfully at an international level.

“It’s like a dream come true,” she said.

“To gain a one year scholarship and train at the AIS is unreal. We will be playing and training for netball almost every day ... I can’t wait.

“We will have a gym session at 7am every morning and in the afternoon we practice our netball skills and drills.”

Simmons said there will be little time for anything else but is hoping to get the odd weekend off.

“Most weekends we will be playing games against other states,” she said.
