Verity takes on leadership role for Fever
NETBALL: When former Grafton netballer Verity Charles was handed the vice-captain's role at West Coast Fever for the upcoming Suncorp Super Netball season, the 25-year-old knew she needed to step up to the plate.
With one of the youngest line-ups in the new franchised competition, the Fever will undergo a big development for the 2017 inaugural season and Charles will be at the helm of it all.
"I think everyone is pretty raring to go,” she said. "It is always a pretty good feeling getting to the end of a pre-season camp when you are just desperate to get on the court.
"We have got a few girls in the team that haven't stepped foot at this level before so there is a lot of development potential in the side.
"It is a pretty good feeling in the camp, there is an air of youthful enthusiasm that I think we can really utilise.”
While it is a big step up for Charles, she will lead under the captaincy of Australian Diamond veteran Natalie Medhurst who brings more than a decade of top level experience to the team.
"She has had an incredible career on the court for many years and that really helps me,” Charles said. "I am probably working with the best of the best.
"This role has been a bit of a wake-up call for me. It almost forces you to be more accountable. With these fresh girls in the side you always want to have their back out there.
The Fever will kick off their Super Netball campaign on Sunday against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Sydney.
