Vernon: Make Cowper a marginal electorate to get funding

EVEN if she isn't elected on Saturday, Greens candidate for Cowper Carol Vernon will still be happy provided there's a decent sized swing against the incumbent MP Luke Hartsuyker.

Echoing the thoughts of Country Labor candidate Alfredo Navarro, Mrs Vernon hopes that Cowper, at the very least becomes a marginal seat after Saturday's election.

"Help make Cowper a marginal electorate. Watch the funds flow to our towns," Mrs Vernon implored.

Three years ago, Mr Hartsuyker had 59.27% of the vote after two-party preferred ballots were tallied. This result made the Cowper electorate one of the safest seats in the country.

Mrs Vernon said voting for the Cowper incumbent on Saturday is not necessarily a vote for Cowper.

""A vote for Luke Hartsuyker is a vote for Tony Abbott," she said.

The Greens candidate pointed out that the Coalition's proposed cuts to the public service is not a step forward for the local economy.

"We don't need cuts to services and jobs," she said.

"We need support staff for our teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, customs officers, and police.

"Every public servant employed in Kempsey, Nambucca, Bowraville, Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Maclean and Grafton grows our economy."

The Greens have made the unusual move of not doing any deals for preference voting, instead asking voters to make their own choices where they want their preferences to go.

"In our preferential voting system your vote can count twice," the Greens candidate explained.

"You can vote first for The Greens then if The Greens are counted out the full value of your vote goes to your second preference.

"In Cowper, The Greens have not preferenced any other party. After you vote Greens the choice is extremely limited.

"You will have to choose where to place your second preference and continue to number every box on that little green ticket."
