VETERAN KNOCK: Simmons adds another ton to legacy

HARWOOD v LAWRENCE: Still harbouring a pang of disappointment after falling agonisingly short of a maiden ton for the 2016/17 LCCA First Grade season in round nine, Harwood opener Geoff Simmons was not going to let the opportunity pass him again.

The experienced opener played a steady knock anchoring Harwood's innings as he hit 12 fours and two sixes on his way to 110 as Harwood notched 227 in the round 14 clash against Lawrence at Harwood Oval on Saturday.

"It really got us off to the right start, he batted well for his century," Harwood captain Matt Peterie said.

"A lot of the young fellas get a lot of confidence out of it.

"He has been a very good player for a long time and the younger fellas look up to him. I am the captain of the side and I look up to him."

It was a dominant total for the Harwood side with Peter Timms (24) and Travis Anderson (25) chiming in through the middle overs to push the side past 200.

However, it was a shaky start to Harwood's defence of the total, with Lawrence opener Brett O'Connor (38) teeing off on Ken Richards bringing up a 38-run cameo in the opening three overs.

One cherry disappeared into a cane field and Richards probably hoped he could follow before the veteran returned with his second spell to dismantle the Lawrence middle order taking 4 for 49 off 6.5 overs.

"When we got Brett and then we followed up with Luke Moloney soon after it was pretty academic," Peterie said.
