Mower Man walks for Bravehearts

THEY say each journey begins with the first step, or in this case, the spin of a wheel.

And for Claude “Mower Man” Harvey and his trusty Victa, that journey began 13 years ago.

He embarked on his annual walk yesterday and over the years has raised more than $540,000 and priceless awareness for Gold Coast charity Bravehearts Inc.

The not-for-profit organisation offers specialised counselling for children who have experienced sexual assault and preventative education for children and adults. His fundraising targets increase each year.

This year he set out to raise $35,000 with the five-day border to Hope Island walk.

“I have been fundraising on weekends since the first of January and I have already raised $41,000,” he said.

The cheeky Mower Man has been overwhelmed by the support. “I just love doing it, I've made so many friends I'd say 90% of the Gold Coast is my friend,” he said, laughing.

And as for the 65-year-old's family: “My son is pretty proud and I think my daughter is proud, but they never tell me. And my wife thinks I'm crazy.”

He originally began walking for the Gold Coast Homeless Youth Project, but was inspired when he saw Channel Nine's Eddie McGuire talking about the charity on television.

“I'm passionate about the work that Bravehearts do.”
