A POLICE officer in Melbourne has shot and killed a man during a violent altercation at Tullamarine in the early morning.

In a statement, Victoria Police media said two police officers were injured and taken to hospital during the incident, which started when officers were investigating stolen cars.

ABC News reported the man who was killed had been driving a stolen car and used it to pin a police officer against a wall.

ABC reported the officer shot four times while he was pinned by the car. Two other men who allegedly fled the scene have also been arrested.

Victoria Police said homicide detectives and the Professional Standards Command were called to the scene of the shooting.

"Further details surrounding the incident will be released when we are in a position to do so," the statement said.
