UDPATE: No bail for woman charged with killing toddler

UPDATE, 4.45pm: POLICE will allege a 16 month-old Hunter Valley toddler was murdered in a two month period in 2001 by an Evans Head woman.

Kate Elizabeth Hutchinson appeared before Magistrate David Heilpern at Lismore Local Court yesterday afternoon she was represented by solicitor Sahm Ryder.

Police allege between Christmas Day in 2000 and February 28, 2001, Hutchinson murdered her baby daughter Leonie Astra Hutchinson at Scone.

Ms Ryder did not enter a plea on behalf of Hutchinson and did not apply for her bail, which was formally refused by Mr Heilpern.

Hutchinson's matters were adjourned until March 22.

 

UPDATE, 4.10pm: AN EVANS Head woman has been charged with one count of murder in relation to the disappearance of a Hunter Valley baby 15 years ago.

The 43-year-old woman appeared in Lismore Local Court this afternoon, where she was refused bail.

She was remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on March 22.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of the toddler, Leonie, who was reported missing in 2004, arrested the 43-year-old woman at her Evans Head home about 7.30am today.

Strike Force Kanuna had been formed to investigate Leonie's disappearance.

The strike force included detectives from Hunter Valley Local Area Command, assisted by State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

There has also been a coronial inquest into her whereabouts.

Investigators believe the child disappeared from her home in Scone sometime around January 2001.

 

INITIAL: DETECTIVES investigating the disappearance of a Hunter Valley baby 15 years ago, have arrested a woman at Evans Head on the Far North Coast.

Police from Hunter Valley Local Area Command have been investigating the disappearance of Leonie Astra Hutchinson, who was reported missing in 2004.

 

Strike Force Kanuna was formed to investigate Leonie's disappearance, and comprises detectives from Hunter Valley Local Area Command, assisted by State Crime Command's Homicide Squad. There has also been a Coronial inquest into her whereabouts.

Investigators believe Leonie was 16 months old when she disappeared from her home in Scone sometime around January 2001.

As a result of on-going inquiries, detectives attached to Strike Force Kanuna, arrested a

43-year-old woman at her home, in Evans Head, about 7.30am today (Wednesday 16 March 2016).

The woman is being taken to Lismore Police Station where she is expected to be charged with murder.
