Vincent O’Dempsey accused of drug trafficking

UNDERWORLD figure Vincent O'Dempsey is facing a court hearing accused of trafficking drugs for more than a decade in regional Queensland.

O'Dempsey, 78, is charged with 10 offences including producing and trafficking drugs alongside alleged associate Keith McVeigh, and a committal hearing began in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Charges were laid against the pair after O'Dempsey's properties at Emu Vale and Massie, outside Warwick, were raided in 2014.

O'Dempsey's ex-wife, Julie Fenton, was the first witness to give evidence.

She said she worked on cannabis crops with O'Dempsey in the mid-1990s until the pair became romantically involved.

"He didn't want me to be involved in the crops, he wanted a respectable stay-at-home wife," she said.

"I knew that the business was still going on each year.

"He would tell me that other people were looking after the place really well so he didn't have to be there quite as much, it enabled him to be home quite a lot more."

Ms Fenton said she believed there was a crop every year until the pair separated in 2008.

But she said there could have been a year missed.

"He never told me where they were, there was no need for me to know," Ms Fenton said.

She said O'Dempsey sometimes brought her "a couple of nice, juicy buds" after picking crops.

The hearing continues today.
