Voters against Ghosts’ Wicks deal

CLARENCE Valley rugby league fans believe the Grafton Ghosts should not have signed alleged drug trafficker and former Newcastle Knights player Danny Wicks for the 2010 season.

On The Daily Examiner’s online poll, by late yesterday more than 260 people had voted on the question ‘Do you agree with the Ghosts’ decision to sign Danny Wicks?’

More than twice as many – 62 per cent to 29 per cent – voted no to the question, with another eight per cent saying that they did not care.

The poll has been running for a week since the news broke that the Ghosts had signed the former NRL cult figure. The poll restricts voting on the subject to one vote per person.

The results conflict with the attitude of Ghosts management who have professed to be supporting the troubled player as he awaits his trial.

At the weekend, the ABC sports panel show Offsiders did a segment on drugs trafficking in sport.

In it, presenter Barrie Cassidy said police alleged Wicks was near the top of a major drug trafficking ring and a number of Knights first grade players had been caught up in this case.

Wicks has said he would vigorously defend the charges.
