Padre Pio wins Jacaranda Cup

Padre Pio, trained by Glen Hodge and ridden by his granddaughter Priscilla Schmidt, scored a hard-fought win in the $18,000 Gateway Lifestyle Residential Parks Jacaranda Cup (1006m).

"A winner yesterday and a winner today. That will lift Pop's spirits," Schmidt said on dismounting.

Port Macquarie-based Hodge has been in ill health lately.

In a race that changed dramatically when the field bunched noticeably nearing the home turn, Schmidt extricated the gelding from the ruck to score a 1-1/4 length win from Jigsaws and After Baron. Padre Pio started at $8.50.
