Wayne Bennett will want better from Milford

RUGBY LEAGUE: Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett will hope the club's highly-trumpeted recruit Anthony Milford can produce something better in the Broncos' trial against North Queensland in Mackay on Saturday.

The Cowboys, who will also play a trial against the Gold Coast in Cairns on February 21, have signed former Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright to a one-year deal as coach Paul Green's assistant for 2015.

Milford (pictured) looked totally lost playing in the Auckland Nines in his first outing for Brisbane in a tournament many believe should have suited his flamboyant style and blistering acceleration.

The former Canberra utility barely made a line break and rarely looked dangerous with the ball in hand.

Brisbane lost its opening Nines game 6-4 to the Roosters, before being thrashed 31-4 by Cronulla which made it through to the final, losing a thriller to South Sydney 18-14 in golden-try extra-time.

The Broncos won their last game 13-0 over a very disappointing Bulldogs which sent a second-string outfit to Auckland.

Bennett is expected to name a strong 20-man squad for the trial in Mackay, Brisbane's second last before they head to the UK for the World Club Challenge, which also involves South Sydney, St George Illawarra and three teams from the Super League.

Ben Hunt, Milford, new fullback Jordan Kahu, Dale Copley, Josh McGuire, newcomer Adam Blair, Matt Gillett and Alex Glenn are all in the running for selection against the Cowboys.
