Wato's brings more fish to Yamba

CHILLY conditions on Monday night didn't stop more than 200 people sampling some of the fine fare from one of Yamba's hottest new businesses - Wato's Fish and Burger Bar.

Yamba Chamber of Commerce secretary Bev Mansfield said it was great to have Mr Young open his new business in a shop that had been vacant since April.

"We have only got one fish and chip in the CBD," she said.

"It's also great to have most of the shops in the CBD open again."

Wato's owner Tony Young said the business launch enabled him to test the fit out of the store and give people samples of food he would be selling.

He said the family owned store was focusing on selling as much fresh local seafood as possible when it is in season.

"Its about taking a great concept that is an Australian icon and simplifying it back to what it should be," he said.

"A small menu, everything hand made and we try to buy as local as we can."

"It's about good honest food, something like your grandma and grandpa would expect back in the day."

Mr Young said the store's name was a tribute to his partner's father, well known Lower Clarence fisherman Eric Watson.

Brian Lewis from Chatsworth Island and his wife were among people tasting Mr Young's delicious seafood.

"I thing it will be great for Yamba to have this new business," he said.

Noalene Brandini of Woombah said the food was very tasty.

"I think it's a great idea by Tony to give people a taste of their wares," she said.

Wato's opened its doors to the public yesterday at 10am.
