Wave at a truckie day on again in 2018

CONGRATULATIONS to all who took part in the inaugural Wave at a Truckie Day. You all helped make the industry a better place, according to organiser and driver Doug Kirby.

The first national feel-good day, in which drivers simply made more of an effort to acknowledge each other with a simple wave, went over with far more support than he bargained for.

"On the social media side there was a lot of positive feedback, which was great,” Doug said.

"People came out of the woodwork to say they would join in, to make it like it was back in the day.

"Like anything, there were a few people who were negative because they didn't get a wave back, but that doesn't matter.

"Over time if everyone keeps doing it we might see a change,” he said.

Other drivers were spotted being a little more enthusiastic.

"Some really got into it, to the extent of arms out the window,” the driver laughed.

"I got about five of those on my way from Brisbane to Sydney.

"There was a bit of chatter on the radio too,” he said.

Because of the community support for the project, National Wave at a Truckie Day will take place again next year.

In the meantime, Doug hopes to push industry positivity further with an online thank you forum for the industry.

"Things get so negative, this is something different for people to share good news,” he said.

"Just an opportunity to shout out to anyone who has lent a hand on the road.”

The page already has more than 200 members.

"We are pushing to get back that recognition and respect for each other,” he said.

"At the same time, don't be afraid to get on the radio if you need help or an extra pair of hands for five minutes.

" I know these days not that many people call up, but you may be surprised at how many people will respond,” he said.

"I just don't think people know when their help is welcome anymore.”
