Surfer rides wave of success
ANGOURIE surfer Chris Zaffis has snatched his first competition win of the year in a nail-biting final of the Subway Summer Surf Series at Cronulla.
Zaffis won the Under-18 Boys section with a heat total of 12.66, after defending champion Jared Hickel dropped in on a fellow finalist in the final minute, cutting the score of his second-highest scoring wave in half.
Cronulla surfer Nathan Martin, who posted an 11.43 total, ended up in second place.
Zaffis said he was stoked to get a win in the clean two-foot peaks, having also nabbed the best scoring wave on Saturday by effortlessly linking together a chain of powerful turns to lock in a score of 8.83.
The cherry on the icing was taking out the day one Expression Session for a handful of massive aerial manoeuvres.
"There were good waves around the whole contest so I was surfing heaps," he said.
"I was out all day on both days.
"The waves were medium-sized and fun; I landed a few airs."
As a result of his win, Zaffis has been invited to attend a three-day Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
The teenager is no stranger to the training facility - he used to have a scholarship there and travelled once a week.
"I'll definitely go if I haven't got exams," he said.
"I'm just trying to get (school) done.
"It's a bit of a shock after a big trip like Hawaii to come back to reality, but I've just got to do it I guess."
The next competition Zaffis will compete in the final Summer Surf Series event at Yamba on March 21-22.
