Paddlers bring back medals
COMMITMENT and hard training from the Northern Regional Dragon Boat Paddlers has paid off with bronze, silver and gold medals at the 2010 State v State AusDBF Australian Dragon Boat Racing Championships.
The Adelaide meet, on April 22, pitted women, mixed and men’s squads against one another.
Teams were made up of paddlers, drummers and sweeps from Yamba to Newcastle and all 87 members of the NSW lineup came home with medals.
The total number of competitors for the State v State race day was 1245.
Assistant coach Robin Smith stated that he was proud of the commitment and the huge effort the squad members put in at training and race day.
“I was very nervous watching our teams in the first heats,” he said.
“Some things didn’t work well but for the finals everything clicked. It’s all about team work and bonding in order for the teams to do their best.”
Paddlers for the North Coast were Meegan Bell, Sue Cornwell, Karen Kiely, Robyn Munson, Lyn Rae, Gail Strickland Bron Sutton and Nigel Sutton from Clarence Valley Dragons Abreast.
Mary Butler and Krys Tyson came from the Grafton Dragon Boat Club, while Janet Coleman, Andrea Cross, Jenny Morris, Maree O’Meally-Smith, Robin Smith and Seja Snow are all part of the Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club.
North Coast regional team manager Maree O’Meally-Smith stated this is the second year that regional teams have joined the competition and NSW is leading the way.
