How couple saved drought death row dog Max

A SECOND chance at life came Max's way when a Sunshine Coast couple saved him from death row after a drought-stricken farmer could no longer care for him.

The bull arab border collie cross was only five months old when he faced being put down after a drought-affected NSW farmer was forced to let him go.

A gut-wrenching photo of Max with his paw pressed up against a steel cage went viral over the internet, causing Djembe Jones, 20, and partner Jacob Connelly, 20, to take immediate action.

"It's hard to go past these things and not do anything about it, so we just thought we would do what we can to help," Ms Jones said.

Max was skin and bone, shy, but still wagging his tail when the couple greeted him with open arms.

"It was really confronting at first, we couldn't even recognise him because we saw photos but we didn't get to see his body and see how skinny he was," Ms Jones said.

"It was quite confronting."

Today, the scared pup in the viral photo is now completely "out of his shell" being fed breakfast, lunch and dinner and even "peeing when he is excited".

He lives in paradise at Buddina on the Sunshine Coast, where he can frolic on golden sand any time he wants.

"Now that Max lives by the beach he gets to go there every day," Ms Jones said.

"I don't think he had ever seen a beach before, he was quite scared of the water at first but I'm sure he will get used to it."

While Ms Jones and Mr Connelly saved Max's life, he has also completed theirs.

"It just makes us feel really great that we are doing the right thing, we want to shed some light and let other people know they can do this as well," she said.

"It's probably the best decision we've ever made."
