Eight-year-old speaks about moment before crash

HERO: Brave 8yo crawls through car wreckage to save sister

CRAWLING through a twisted car wreckage to save someone's life is a gruelling task usually reserved for hardened firefighters, not an eight-year-old girl.

But that's just what Jade-Elle Brown did three years ago when she rescued her younger sister who was trapped in a crushed vehicle cabin after a crash near Torbanlea.

Tinana Jade-Elle, now 11, is being recognised for her act of heroism with a bravery award by the Governor of Queensland.

On October 2, 2013, a motor home travelling along the Bruce Hwy collided with a dual-cab utility driven by Jade-Elle's grandfather.

STORY: Four people, including two children, injured in crash

On impact the motor home flipped, landed on top of the vehicle and crushed the roof down to door level.

Jade-Elle and her two sisters were inside the cabin of the crushed dual-cab.

Sister Molly received the worst injuries and was trapped with her seatbelt on.

Her brave big sister, Jade-Elle crawled over to unbuckle her.

Jade-Elle, who is the school captain at Parke State School, said she felt "lucky to be alive".

"I was scared and I remember hearing screaming," she said.

"We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Jade-Elle's mum Justine feels grateful her daughters and dad made it out alive.

"I am so proud of her courage for crawling back into the vehicle to undo her sister's seatbelt so she could be rescued," Justine said.
