Lily and William most popular names

A ROYAL and a flower have come out on top as the country's most popular baby names.

In a list conducted by McCrindle Research, William topped the list once again for boys while Lily was the most-loved name for girls.

Others that were popular included Jack and Ethan for boys and Ruby and Chloe for girls.

Toowoomba mother Skye Eaton said even though she and her husband Sam knew the name was popular, they still named their daughter Ruby, now 10 weeks old.

"We had picked the name out from the start of my pregnancy," Mrs Eaton said.

"I had always liked it.

"I did question it but then I spoke to my mum who said it was my great-grandmother's name so the fact it was a family name made it more special.

"I decided just because other people loved the name shouldn't stop us from using it."

The Twilight book and movie series made their mark with both Isabella (number six) and Bella (number 49) making an appearance while Jacob came in at number 13 and Edward also appeared (number 63).

As always, the influence of celebrities was apparent with many of their names of choice making it into the top 100.

These included Danni Minogue's son Ethan (number three), Reese Witherspoon's daughter Ava (number 12), Michelle William's daughter Matilda (number 19), Matthew McConaughey's son Levi (number 28), Hugh Jackman's son Oscar (number 31), Pink's daughter Willow (number 52), Victoria Beckham's daughter Harper (number 53), and Guy Sebastian's son Hudson (number 93).
