Long Island is an Emerald jewel in a turquoise crown - embedded in the heart of the gorgeous Whitsunday Passage.

LAZING around on a white sandy beach surrounded by crystal clear water and tropical surroundings is the holiday everyone wants.

The Whitsundays encapsulates this dream location which is why it was voted Australia's Top Destination to Experience in 2013.

The picture perfect location beat places such as the Great Ocean Road, Uluru and Cairns to take top spot in the poll, by Experience Oz Australia and New Zealand.

Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited's (WMDL) chief executive officer Danial Rochford said he was impressed with the result.

"It's fantastic to see that Australians are still choosing to travel domestically and support our national tourism industry," he said.

"National consumer polls like this are important as it puts destinations on the map and front of mind for those looking for a break, while increasing awareness about the industry as a whole.

"The Whitsundays offer a huge array of marine and land-based activities for tourists and locals alike to experience among one of the most majestic and breathtaking backdrops in the world."

Experience Oz polled more than 1000 people, with a number of regional tourism offices getting their local communities involved to vote.

The initial shortlist of 30 Australian destinations featured the best cities, regions and hot spots such as Barossa Valley and The Daintree.
