Wicked review: The green machine rolls back into Brisbane

WHILE many women were indulging in wickedness at the cinemas with Christian Grey this weekend, Wicked The Musical made its dazzling return to Brisbane this week.

Gone were the dramas that plagued the show's opening during the 2011 Brisbane floods.

Original Australian Elphaba Jemma Rix is the show's guiding light and she just keeps getting better as the "wicked" green witch.

It's impossible not to get chills ask her voice rings out from on high during the penultimate act one closer Defying Gravity.

I imagine Rix must feel like she's walking on the clouds after the song.

The second half of the show is a bit darker than the first, but anyone familiar with The Wizard of Oz will know the story isn't supposed to end well for Elphaba.

Yesterday's official opening night performance of the 10th anniversary tour featured the Brisbane debuts of two of the main cast members: Suzie Mathers as Glinda and Simon Gallaher as The Wizard.

Mathers is great in the role as the perky, initially self-absorbed "good" witch, even if it's hard not to still think of original Glinda Lucy Durack, on maternity leave, in the frilly dresses.

Mathers has great chemistry with Rix, which reflects their friendship off-stage, and that's important as it's these two women who carry the show.

The Emerald City is calling, and it's well worth the trip down the yellow-brick road to QPAC.
