Wild weather clearing for north

SHE may have left behind a little mopping up in Northern NSW, but Mother Nature's focus has well and truly turned to the state's south, according to the weather bureau.

Sydney Metrologist Olenka Rudewych said wild weather which lashed the NSW coast from Sydney to the Queensland border this week was set to clear by Thursday night.

She said grey skies could still loom above Sydney and the central coast until the weekend but communities from Coffs Harbour to Tweed Heads could expect little more than the odd shower.

"All of what has been called wild weather in the northern areas has cleared off," Ms Rudewych said

"The heavy rainfall they experienced yesterday (Wednesday) has moved well south of them and is headed to Illawarra and the south coast.

"There could be some very light showers around Coffs (Harbour) and just south of there, but everywhere north from there is pretty clear at the moment - reasonably sunny and partly clouded."

While sheets of heavy rain caused flash flooding around Sydney and parts of the Mid North Coast on Wednesday night Ms Rudewych said the most recent event could hardly be described as "significant".

"Statistics along the northern Sydney area and around Gosford and do show the heaviest rainfall in a lot of locations since March last year," she said

"But given the weather patterns we have had for the past few years, it is not a stand-out event."

As winter approaches temperatures will start to cool but Ms Rudewych said residents on the north coast still had some time before warmer clothes would be needed during the day.

"It will certainly cool down eventually coming into winter but not for at least the next week," she said

"We are at least looking at mid 20s and still reasonably warm."
