Wind-fanned fire leaps creek
A BUSHFIRE fanned by 60km/h wind gusts has this afternoon crossed Deep Creek at Hyland Park and made its way towards the Nambucca Heads industrial estate.
The fire, which has escaped from the Nambucca State Forest led to the temporary closure of the North Coast Rail Line and has cast thick smoke plumes across the Pacific Highway.
Rural Fire Service firefighters and two State Forests crews are currently backburning to stop the 72-hectare fire threatening nearby properties.
RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said fire crews dedicated their efforts to fighting the blaze from the western bank of Deep Creek after flames fanned by the winds crossed the waterway.
"The fire was listed as controlled at 15.30pm and back burning measures are in place to stop the fire as it appears to be making its way towards the Nambucca Heads industrial estate, but no properties are at risk at the moment," he said.
The RFS says it has 23 firefighters on scene and the blaze has been listed for fire investigation, however the cause is yet to determined.
