Family pet becomes favourite for Kensei Club race day

WHEN it comes to racing there's nothing like keeping it all in the family for Lismore trainer Sharon Pepper.

The Pepper-trained Bingo Bobby, who lines up at the Grafton meeting is looking to win the Kensei Club Race Day 6/11 Class 2 Hcp (1400m) and is considered a family pet and raced by Pepper, her husband Mark, daughter Kirsty, son Ben and his girlfriend, Sonia Duck.

The group purchased the son of Snippetson from the internet following ad add by well-known bloodstock syndicator, Shelly Hancox.

Pepper describes Bingo Bobby as "like a teenager still growing up."

"He stays in a day paddock and when you let him off the head collar he does his little things like rolling around and doing cartwheels," Pepper said.

"He's a lovely natured horse - very affectionate- but you can almost see him thinking of things he can get up to.

"He's just like a teenager. Still growing up."

Pepper's son and his girlfriend Sonia reside in Cambodia.

"They're far, far away owners," Pepper laughed. "They watch all his runs on the internet.

"They're keen when prizemoney goes into their bank account."

From 22 starts Bingo Bobby has recorded two wins and ten placing's netting $49,775 prizemoney.

Pepper reckons Bingo Bobby has been unlucky not to turn some of his placing's into wins.

Last start at Lismore was a case in point.

The gelding was forced to make a long run to the lead mid race and despite being tackled in earnest in the home straight kept fighting back to be beaten a short head by Kristrom over 1516m on September 26.

Bingo Bobby was previously third to Lassila and My Maserati over 1400m at Ballina on September 13 first-up from a 48-day break.

"Janette Johnson said she crucified him at Lismore," Pepper said. "She openly admitted that.

"Bingo Bobby still toughed it out and wasn't beaten far.

"I've given Janette another chance tomorrow. She deserves that."

Johnson, who claims 1.5kg in the country, is apprenticed to Bryan Guy on the Gold Coast.

"Grafton and the set weights Class 2 handicap should suit Bingo Bobby," Pepper added.

He's got a couple of things in his favour today."
