Woman in broken down car killed after truck hit from behind

A FEMALE passenger sitting in a broken down car on the Hawkesbury River Bridge section of the M1 in NSW has died after the car was hit from behind by a semi trailer.

Police say car that was hi in the crash, which happened about 1pm this afternoon at Mooney Mooney, may have suffered mechanical failure prior to the impact.

The black sedan, police were told, had been stopped in a lane when it was struck from behind by the truck.

Police say the female driver of the car was able to get out of the vehicle prior to the crash, however her female passenger remained in the car and was killed.

The male truck driver was uninjured, but was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

And the driver of the car was also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Emergency services remain on site and there are significant delays for motorists.

Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant and not to divert their attention away from the road as they pass the crash site.
