Women who love to brew
WITH only their third brew, the Yamba quintet of Cindy Ryan, Hannah Philbrook, Alexie Miller, Sonya Hayes and Mel Kelly has tasted success, with a special commendation at the recent Big River Brewfest home brew competition.
Ms Miller said the friends decided to tackle home brewing because they always enjoyed getting together on Sundays for a few drinks and to talk about their week.
"That's where we came up with the name, Sunday Sips for our beer at the competition," she said.
Once they decided to try home brewing, the women turned their weekend sessions to good effect.
"We had to start drinking tall-ies to get the empties we needed to brew with," Ms Miller said.
She said the group had only been brewing for two months and had just put down their fourth batch.
"We thought it would be a laugh, but we're actually really enjoying it," she said.
"At the moment we're just brewing from kits, but as we get more experienced we're going to start tinkering."
The group was excited to learn about the upcoming Grafton Show Homebrewing competition, but sadly their beer left them a bit flat.
"We wanted to brew a dark ale, but it really wasn't up to scratch for the show," Ms Miller said.
