Women's crews to tackle best

YAMBA and Minnie Water will be the flag bearers for the Clarence Valley at the Navy Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL) Best of the Best surf lifesaving event at Cronulla on Saturday.

Yamba’s open women’s squad and the Minnie Water under-23 women are among 72 crews from 38 clubs that will compete at the event.

The crews were specifically chosen from the five NSW regions to contest the Best of the Best event that will draw the curtain on the summer season.

Divisions of surfboat racing set to be contested this weekend are open men, open women, reserves, under-23 men and women and under-19s.

Racing is scheduled to begin at Wanda Beach at 8am on Saturday.

There will be four rounds of racing in each division and the crew that accumulates the most points will be crowned overall champion.

Crews will race over 400 metres and with wet starts and finishes, organisers have predicted some intense racing action.

With good size surf and sunny weather forecast, thrills and spills are expected.

Saturday’s meet is the last in the 2010-11 Navy ASRL series to be held in NSW.

The series, which commenced in October, comprises a series of events at some of Australia’s premier beaches.

The ASRL was established in NSW in 1992 as the International League of Australian Surfboat Rowers and currently has more than 3000 members from an estimated 260 clubs which make up more than 450 crews.

The Navy is among the major sponsors of the series and as part of the deal is offering an ASRL club the opportunity to win a new, fully equipped surf boat and trailer valued at $28,000.

Supporters of individual clubs can download the ASRL Navy Facebook application, answer the quiz and they are automatically entered in the draw for the boat.

For every quiz question that is answered correctly, one point is allocated to their club and at the end of the season, the club with the most points will win the surfboat and one supporter will win a $1000 Harvey Norman voucher for themselves, just for voting.
