Working with friends to gain victory in penning titles

WORKING with friends to get the job done is the key to winning a team penning competition as well as the best thing about it, according to Tom Morgan.

"It was really, really good," the 15-year-old said of the win at the NSW State Team Penning Titles at the weekend.

The 15-year-old member of the Clarence Valley Team Penning club, who has been team penning for two years, and his mates Ben Ensby and Elliott Cooper took out the top two spots in the youth section of the titles.

The inaugural event, the first of its kind under a new revamped Team Penning Australia, was held in Grafton at the weekend with more than 100 teams competing.

Club president Karen Morgan said it was a huge event to take on but the high level of commitment from club members and overwhelming sponsorship meant the weekend flowed nicely.

"Judge Ivan Benko of Glen Innes along with the announcing talents Fiona Leviny, did a great job over the 2 days and he was very impressed with the level of competition and sportsmanship," she said.

"We are reasonably new club and focussed on helping Team Penning Australia promote this fast growing family sport."

Morgan said thank you to everyone who put in "such a huge effort to make this happen."

"I would also like to thank the many competitors who travelled to our event," she said.

"Local competitors featured throughout the competition with a number of them making the final round."

After the success of the event, Morgan said she would probably be taking some youth teams to the Australian titles in Tamworth next month.

In team penning, teams can enter as many times as they like as well as mix with other people to create a number of teams.

There were 104 open runs and 30 youth runs.
