OLIVIA Wells may not be wearing the Miss Universe crown today, but it's still been a thrilling adventure for Mackay designer Jason Chetcuti, who flew to Russia to watch his dress being worn by the Aussie beauty.

And while his stunning blue gown had already won the hearts of Australians, it stepped onto the world stage at the pageant yesterday.

His mother June couldn't be prouder.

His aim is to have a commercial range here in Australia and overseas and this experience with Miss Universe will certainly help.

Mr Chetcuti's design won The Face of Australia Cosmetics National Costume Competition.

Ms Chetcuti said her son was living the dream after he scored a "trifecta" of awards at Melbourne Cup events.

His African-inspired piece worn at the Melbourne Cup placed third in Fashions on the Field.

In Brisbane, another of his designs came first while a piece a Mackay contestant wore placed third.
