Yamba makes most of derby
UNDERDOGS Yamba used their only chance of the 2010 season to grab local bragging rights in rugby union’s pre-season day at Yamba Oval.
Due to Grafton sitting in a higher division, the one-time Grafton-Yamba derby matches have been forced to a take back seat in recent times.
But the chance for Tim Gooley’s men to get one over their higher profile Redmen rivals proved too good to pass up.
Yamba used a flying start to overcome Grafton 21-5 at the end of the three-period contest.
The Buccaneers held a 14-0 lead early before the match petered out in a stalemate.
Not that it mattered much to Gooley, who was happy to just get a morale-boost before the season proper starts.
“It was very physical as all Yamba-Grafton games are,” he said.
“It was a real arm wrestle.
“There’s a great rivalry but because we are in different competitions this is the only chance we get to play Grafton.
“We can’t remember the last time we beat the Redmen.
“But I don’t want to take anything away from Grafton though who provided lots of players for the day.”
In the earlier matches Yamba’s under-19s beat Grafton and Iluka downed Grafton in the reserves.
