Lucy in bid for Jaca crown

AFTER putting the finishing touches on last year’s Jacaranda Queen candidates, beauty therapist Lucy Dalton has joined the running for the annual quest.

The So-U Beauty apprentice, 21, found inspiration to become part of the much-loved tradition after applying the 2009 candidates’ make-up throughout their Jacaranda journey.

“We did the make-up for the girls last year and they had so much fun,” she said.

“I’ve always wanted to do it.”

The third candidate to nominate for this year’s quest, Miss Dalton moved to Grafton with her family when she was in primary school. She attended Gillwinga Primary then South High before she started full-time work as an assistant at Ada and Flynn Pharmacy.

Two years ago she got a start in the career she had always dreamed of, beauty therapy, when So-U Beauty’s owner Sharon Fallon took her on as an apprentice.

Now she has just a year until she will be fully-qualified in all things beauty – from make-up and massage to facials and nails.

Miss Dalton travels an hour each way to work from her home at Yulgilbar Station, where she lives with her partner and head stockman Brett Ellem. She said the long journey was ‘worth it’.

“It’s so pretty out there,” she said.

When speaking of the Jacaranda Festival, Miss Dalton said she had ‘always’ loved it – particularly the sense of community that emanates when the Jacarandas are in full bloom.

“Grafton really comes together at Jacaranda time,” she said.

Miss Dalton, who wants to travel overseas with her career, said she hoped to gain ‘confidence’ from her involvement in the quest.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone in the community,” she said.

She has plans to fundraise for the Jacaranda Festival – the candidates’ aim – via a pre-July-races black-tie event featuring a fashion parade, as well as a fun cricket day on Yulgilbar Station.

Nominations for the 2010 Jacaranda Queen Quest close on Thursday, May 27. Forms are available at the Jacaranda Festival office, open 9am to 5pm Tuesdays, upstairs in Dougherty House.
