Young Buccs win at Mullum

THE Yamba Buccaneers under-19s rugby side scored an impressive 24-15 win over the Mullumbimby Moonshiners at Brunswick Heads on Saturday.

The long bus trip had a calming effect on the young Buccs as it took an early Mullumbimby try to awake Yamba and get them into the game.

A great pass from Chris Jones put Rob Williams into a huge hole to score Yamba’s first try.

Mullum hit back through Yamba’s lazy defence to score beside the post and take a 12-5 lead.

Outstanding outside centre Luke Bourke broke through Mullum’s defence to find his way to the tryline. Williams converted and the sides went to halftime locked at 12-12.

A rev up at halftime appeared to help Yamba step up a gear, with a more committed attitude in their game.

Yamba took control of the game with Williams keeping the opposition guessing by running, stepping and putting through a chip and chase on his way to the tryline.

Jones missed the shot at goal, but Yamba held a 17-12 lead.

A penalty goal to Mullum dragged them to within two points, but Yamba sealed the game with a well-rehearsed backline move, in which fullback Tim Horan sliced through the defence and scored beside the post. Jordan Fisher converted to finish the game 24-15.

Points went to; James Gill 3pts, Williams 2pts, Ethan Stacey 1pt. The players’ player award went to Williams.
